Getting sporting projects up and running

Sports development has been the subject of a lot of attention over the last couple of years. Increasing concerns over childhood obesity and inactivity have led to more and more funding being ploughed into sporting projects in a bid to encourage people to develop more active lifestyles.

Following the Government’s publication of its ‘Game Plan, a strategy for delivering Government’s sport and physical activity objectives’ in 2003, Sport England developed its ‘Framework for Sport in England’. This aims to make England the most active and successful sporting nation in the world, by providing funding for a range of projects.

As a result two funding streams have been introduced; a national stream and a community stream. The former funds projects delivered through the national governing bodies for sports.

Through ‘Game Plan’ and Sport England’s framework, 20 sports have been identified as priorities for funding through the national stream if they meet the objectives of increasing physical activity and promoting sporting achievements. These are:

Athletics
Football

Swimming
Tennis

Cycling
Cricket

Rowing
Rugby Union

Sailing
Rugby League

Canoeing
Golf

Triathlon
Hockey

Judo
Badminton

Gymnastics
Squash

Equestrian
Netball

There are also a further 10 sports which have been identified as having great growth potential given the right structure and guidance. These are:

Basketball
Lacrosse
Rounders/Softball/Baseball
Outdoor pursuits
Movement and Dance
Bowls
Table Tennis
Karate

Volleyball
Boxing

The community funding stream is distributed through Sport England’s nine regions, each of which has it’s own individual objectives. Projects meeting these objectives will have priority for funding. Anyone wanting to apply for funding from Sport England should look at the main objectives of the relevant region, details of which can be found at www.sportengland.org.uk.

If a project qualifies for funding, Sport England will provide guidance notes to help develop the project. When funding has been granted, the hard work really begins as people try to get the project underway as speedily as possible.

Through its sports changing units, Portaloo is able to help new projects get up and running quickly by providing high quality amenities on an interim basis whilst permanent facilities are being developed.

Julian Robinson, South Region Hire Manager for Portaloo, said: "Many projects that apply for funding involve building a sports facility or improving and extending existing facilities. Although these are challenging projects they can have huge benefits for the local community, as well as sport in England as a whole, by allowing more people to get involved in physical activity.

"However, building new facilities is a time consuming business, so it’s often worthwhile hiring interim buildings to allow the project to get up and running more quickly.

"Our sports changing units provide high quality amenities that can be delivered quickly and easily, allowing a project to get underway almost immediately rather than having to wait for traditional buildings to be built. We carry out free site surveys to establish customers’ exact requirements and carry out all the maintenance on the buildings throughout the duration of the hire period."

Portaloo sports changing units are available in a range of sizes to meet customer needs, so whether it’s for a team of five or 50 the required amenities can be quickly delivered, offering high levels of comfort.
